E is for Eggs

What the heck do eggs have to do with Anansi? Well, for one thing in my book Anansi and Company, there's a story called "Eggs and Scorpions." For another, eggs turn up quite frequently in the original stories.

Eggs with nest

I have a couple of possibles reasons why this might be so. 1.) Eggs are food and food is a theme running through many of the tales.
2.) Eggs could be scavenged or hunted for in the bush.
3.) Even very poor people, even the slaves, could have a few chickens scratching around in the yard, so therefore they had eggs.

  2. Hi Bish .. they are a staple food aren't they - yet eggs abound .. so many creatures lay eggs ... and they're raided by others .. humans as well as animals ...

Thank goodness for eggs - we had chickens when I was a kid .. cheers Hilary

  3. Makes me think of the 'wild' chickens of STX. Chickens and their eggs everywhere.

  5. Hello, Bish

I thought this would be a quick 'hi' and then off again but, no. I found myself needing to go all the way back to 'A' to catch up on Anansi the Spider. Fabulous!

    Thanks

  7. You picked a great topic for E! We had home churned butter, which we bartered for fresh eggs from a neighbor.

Eggs have long been a valuable food source!

  11. Not to mention, baby spiders are born from eggs, as are many other creatures. Eggs are a very important element in giving new life to the world. Gotta love eggs :)

  12. Hi human, Bish,

Quite the "fowl" pawsting. I was trying to think of eggs jokes but my thoughts are scrambled.

  13. I'm transitioning to veganism, but I've long been interested in having my own chickens for humanely-raised eggs. The few times I have bought eggs recently, it's been from small, local farms.

  15. Eggs are like little treasure chests...you have to break them open, but then there's golden treasure inside!

  16. Ooooh, now I'm very curious about the "Eggs and Scorpion" story. I love the pic - 4 different colored eggs in there. I'm so stupid about that stuff, I'm only familiar with store-bought white ones. ;)
