J is for Johnson's Reef

For this, my fourth year doing the challenge, I've decided to share place names from the Virgin Islands. For such a small spot in the ocean, it seems like every rock, cove, hill and house has been christened. The names are a unique mix of Spanish, Danish, French, Dutch, English, and African to name a few.

Johnson's Reef
Johnsons Reef, is the pale water to the left in this picture. The white streak is the wake of a boat going just to its north. When it's rough and waves break over the reef we've always said that Johnsons Reef is showing its fangs. Many a boat has gone aground on it. Though you can't see them, it is well marked with warning buoys. This picture was taken overlooking an infinity pool.

Jersey Bay, St. Thomas is part of an area known as the Lagoon, which is home to several marinas. This picture was taken from Compass Point.

Jacob's Ladder, St. John As one might imagine it is a steep hill/road.
Johnny Horn Trail, St. John
John's Folly, St. John A lovely rocky beach on the south side near Coral Bay.
Jumbie Bay, St. John
Jack Rock, St. Thomas is a rock in the harbor of Redhook

  1. You know the islands like the back of your hand. Were these pictures taken very long ago? The water looks so calm.

  2. Again, those colors are so lovely, Bish. Blue never looks as inviting as it does on an island.

  4. I like that expression: showing its fangs. I bet it can be dangerous in rough weather!

  8. Looks lovely, I'd love to be on one of those boats. Nothing better than swimming in the sea.

  10. Really good idea for an A-Z series. Write (and picture) what you know.

  13. This is exactly why I'm so bad at the A to Z, I get about half way and fall off a cliff. Trying to catch up today. As always, great pics.
