You might be surprised by the number of well known people who were born  in the Caribbean. Here are just a few.

Most everyone has heard of Bob Marley, born and raised in Jamaica.

But did you know Tim Duncan was born and raised on St. Croix?

And that Rihanna is from Barbados?

National Baseball Hall of Famer, Roberto Clemente, was born and raised in Puerto Rico. This is a picture of the stadium in Puerto Rico that is named in his honor.

Or how about John James Audubon? Not only was he born in Haiti, he was an illegitimate child.

Alexander Hamilton, also illegitimate, was born on Nevis and raised on St. Croix.

Dr. William Thornton (not a house hold name) drew the original design for the Capital Building in Washington D. C. He was born on the tiny island of Jost Van Dyke (a close neighbor to St. Thomas) in the British Virgin Islands.

The father of French Impressionism, Camille Pissarro, was born and raised on St. Thomas.

  1. Cool. Well in the Pacific NW, we have Bill Gates and William Boeing. There are some great bands, and we also have a crop of serial killers. Must have something to do with the unending rain, I think.

And here in SC, we have all kinds of history. Many famous people, too many to list.

  2. Wow! That's a lot of famous people from such a small area. I had no idea about Kelsey Grammar. The more recent celebrities from our area are football player Rey Maualuga of the Bengals and singer Sara Bareilles.

  3. Cool list! People who have lived in my neighborhood over the years include Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, lyricist Jerry Leiber (Stand By Me, Hound Dog, Kansas City and on and on), Nicolas Cage, Free Speech activist Mario Savio.

  4. Lots of famous people born in my city - I'm not sure if any of them stayed though. :-)

  5. Awesome list! I think Nicki Minaj might be from Trinidad... I think.

  6. That's very interesting that all those people were born in the Caribbean. I live in Missouri, which is a pretty boring state, but we do have Brad Pitt as a claim to fame. I'm not sure if he was born here or just lived here, though.

  7. Wow--what an eye opener!

I'm trying to think of some well known Calgarians. I know there's Brett Wilson, from Dragon's Den on TV. He's a local. Jan Arden the singer is too.
