Incongruities: A Random Thought

Like riding a bicycle in the snow.

The other day I was down at my gym walking on the tread-mill, not a favorite thing to do. But afterwards I'm rewarded with water aerobics, which is something I love.

I walk at a goodly pace, 3.0 to 3.4 MPH with an incline of 3 %. (I'll get it steeper soon enough.)

Walking the tread-mill would be deadly boring if it weren't for the fact that there are large plate glass windows on two sides that look out onto nature. I can occupy myself by watching lizards climb on the glass, or hummers sipping late blooming salvias, or bumble bees bumbling around the sages, or butterflies drifting by, or buzzards circling overhead, or see birds flying in and out of the great old bald cypress trees that line the river which flows 100 or so feet away.

If these distractions weren't enough I have my own brain. I can think of ideas for future blogs (like this one) or think about my current WIP or meditate on my countless blessings or dream of far away places.

Still, with all these wonderful distractions every once in a while my eyes get pulled up to the two TVs that hang on the wall over one of the sets of windows. Luckily, there is no sound, you have to plug in headphones, earbuds (what-e-ver) to hear about the latest disaster, murder, scandal etc.

What I've noticed is this: most often there are two kinds of commercials. One kind is for skinny clothes from places like Kohl's, Target, Sears, J. C. Penny's. You know the kind, clothes for those unfortuante anorexics. Skinny jeans, pencil-thin sleeved jackets, tiny little blouses. And because it's fall, high-heeled boots, perfect for walking around on icy sidewalks.

The other kind of commercial I see is for calorie laden food, dripping with butter and sauces and chocolate from places like McDonald's, Dairy Queen, Red Lobster, The Olive Garden.

I see an incongruity here. Seems to me the food and clothing industry ought to get on the same page. Either the clothes advertised should be for us normal and heavier people in which case fat (errr fast) food ads could continue as they are, or the food people should be advertising low-cal food so we could fit into those skinny clothes.

Either way, think of how THAT would boost the economy!

Have you noticed any glaring incongruities lately?

  1. I have that same problem with ads! Especially in women's magazine that dedicate ten whole pages sper issue to reasons why we should be thin, how we should get to be thin, and what will happen when we are thin...and interspersed with those articles are the most tempting, calorie laden, delicious recipes and/or adverts for food food food. They should make up their minds what they're trying to sell us!

  2. Judy beat me to it. I always have to chuckle at the covers of women's magazines. There's always a huge color picture of a decadent dessert and then an article title blaring LOSE TEN POUNDS THIS WEEK!

  3. Well, I'd heard that in America poor people are fat. How could that be?! We were poor and malnourished in India, so I definitely wanted to come to America.

  4. Maybe they are on the same page, with a silent partner: the diet and weight loss industry! Make everyone feel the need to be tiny, bring them to fat food, then voila! Everyone will flock to weight loss centers and fad diets!

Love the pic of the bicycle in the snow.

  5. I'm a constant incongruity...I'll order the super deluxe everything and the kitchen sink pizza with extra cheese and a side of ranch sauce (that's a bit of an exaggeration) then I'll get the Diet Coke. As if somehow the two balance out. :)

  6. Incongruity to me: elementary school teachers with tons of tattoos. Guess I'm showing my age, but that's just weird to me.

  7. DANG IT ALL! I wants me some skinny jeans. But tis not to be, Bish. Waaahhaaaa

But I do thinks that it is really STUPID. The incongruity is ridiculous. Especially when there are so many starving people in the world.

  8. You are so observant!
How about the incongruity of a police car (with no lights on) speeding and then tailgating another car? Yup, I've seen it.
