Tell Me Why

Today is the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

It is a given that World War II cost more lives than any other war in history. Military and civilian losses vary from 50 to 73 million. Russia bore the brunt with over 23 million lives lost.

99.9% of the time I would say human history is the history of war, conflict, invasion, suppression....From family members to small related clans to world powers, we seem to be all about fighting each other.

Tell me why?

  1. I don't know why, Bish, but it is noble to die fighting for what you believe ... today, we live and breathe freely because these men and women sacrificed their lives.

There are over 40 million abortions per year (current stats) worldwide. Over 90% are them are for social reasons (the baby is inconvenient or simply not wanted).

  2. Oh, I know there's a flip side Vijaya. How much more crowded would the world be today if those 73 million had lived? How much more polluted would the air and water be? How depleted our natural resources?

If we do not kill ourselves off, the planet has a way of doing it for us through disease and natural disasters.

The real point is that humanity can't seem to live with itself peacefully. We have not evolved spiritually to a place where we don't need to fight with each other over just about any little thing, where we intelligently regulate our numbers, where we are not driven (or seem to be driven) by greed and power, where we take care of each other instead of hurt each other.

We are still emotionally cavemen (errr, cavepeople) infants on the evolutionary time-line. Just look at what we are doing to ourselves and our planet, the only home we will ever have? We are just like children whose brains have not yet developed enough to be able to see the consequences of their actions.

  3. I'd take a crowded planet any day, Bish. There is a natural birth-death cycle. I wish we wouldn't interfere in it, but celebrate it, welcome it, instead of worrying about the load on the planet. We'll find a way to live together peacefully.

Mother Earth does rebel when we mistreat her. She restores the balance in her own way.

  4. Bish,
I think your question is very important and I loved the video. What a powerful voice he has!

  5. Oh I so agree with you Vijaya! And yes Mother Earth will survive even if we don't.

Thanks, Angela. I was nearly moved to tears when I heard it.

  6. Wow - this is quite a change after the flowers! Actually, they are connected. Why don't we celebrate what we have instead of all the destructive behaviors humans engage in? And engage in far too much...

  7. Oh, I agree Anne! We have so much to be thankful for and it seems we just take it for granted.

  8. I think that as a species we gravitate towards conflict. It breaks my heart that the very things that should uplift and enrich us -- like cultural diversity and religion -- merely divide us. When I think of all the lives lost in wars, I wonder why too. And I despair of ever learning the answer.
