K is for Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope from the Greek kalos meaning beautiful, plus eidos meaning form, plus scope meaning to look. Thus it means to observe a beautiful form.

Writing a good story is rather like building a good kaleidoscope. Plot might be the mirrored facets that collect light. Characters, dialog, setting, are the jewels that are reflected in the mirrors, making pictures. Viewed from different perspectives one can gain a different vision, a different understanding, a different meaning from each of the jewels as they interact with each other.

And words, words are the light, making even the darkest stories beautiful.

Build your kaleidoscope with care. Are your mirrors smooth? Are your jewels the best color? Is your light clear and bright?

And today is my Sweetie's birthday!

Happy Birthday, Stan, my man!

  1. Even as a grownup I am still fascinated by kaleidoscopes. I had no idea the word was Greek. I'm learning so much from reading these A to Z posts :)

  7. I think one of the things that is a little frightening about writing is the way that what you write can be interpreted by each individual viewing it. Exciting but scary too if you know what I mean. No matter how careful you are about your phrasing there will be someone who just gets it all wrong.

  14. Wow, you're right--a good story is kind of like a kaleidoscope. The more I think about this, the more I like the comparison.

  15. Happy Birthday to your husband!

I love kaleidoscopes, but I could get mesmerized just looking at them. Trying to sort out their shifting shapes and colors is definitely as hard as trying to make plots believable and cohesive.
