Writing a good story is rather like building a good kaleidoscope. Plot might be the mirrored facets that collect light. Characters, dialog, setting, are the jewels that are reflected in the mirrors, making pictures. Viewed from different perspectives one can gain a different vision, a different understanding, a different meaning from each of the jewels as they interact with each other.

ReplyDeleteI think one of the things that is a little frightening about writing is the way that what you write can be interpreted by each individual viewing it. Exciting but scary too if you know what I mean. No matter how careful you are about your phrasing there will be someone who just gets it all wrong.
ReplyDeleteVery cool post. I am mesmerized by the moving picture!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day with your special birthday boy!

ReplyDeleteI love kaleidoscopes, but I could get mesmerized just looking at them. Trying to sort out their shifting shapes and colors is definitely as hard as trying to make plots believable and cohesive.
Happy birthday, Stan. Wow, I can still see that moving kaleidoscope against the white. :)
