I'm Still Here - Question of the Month

Happy New Year!

I had a very relaxing time during my break. I'm sure I could have done more than I did besides help Hubby rake and haul away leaves. But ask me if I care? (Anyone care to answer?) I have been working on my book, A Piece of the Sky, but it's slow going. Wednesday's Insecure Writer's Support Group post will give an update on that.

Here are some things I experienced while away from the blogs.

This is also about

Being Thankful

The Super Moon.

A swarming of lady bugs.

I know, how can one lady bug be a swarm?
Trust me, they were EVERYwhere!

The arrival of robins. We haven't seen them in a while because of the drought. It was delightful to hear their laughing calls in the trees around our house.

Here are my New Year's Resolutions.

And lastly, the Question of the Month, hosted Michael D'Agostino at A Life Examined .

This month's question is:

What was your *growing up* moment.

I think I'd have to say it was when I volunteered to be the one to tell my cousin, who was living with us, that her mother had died (suicide too). I was about 18. My mother asked if I was sure I wanted to, but I felt certain, since we were close and sharing the same room, that it ought to be me. There was no easy or gentle way to break the news. Considering the circumstances, I think we handled the situation in a rather mature manner. No hysteria, though there were, of course, tears and hugging. My mother had us on a plane to the states the next day so we could be with her father and go to the funeral.

A rather depressing note on which to end the first blog of the New Year, but hey... ask a personal question, get a personal answer.

With that, I'll leave you with a this link to the 45 books I read in 2016!

So, what are you thankful for? Did you have a good Christmas and New Year? See or do anything special? Make any resolutions?

  1. Love your picture of the super moon and your goals are so awesome. Letting go of all of that is so important. Happy New Year!

  3. That's a tough moment. I think growing up involves something like that though. There's a quote in a movie I like - "Your childhood is over the moment you realize you're going to die." While harsh, I think there is truth in it.

    Happy New Year!

    1. I agree. Though I had experienced death, funerals etc before that moment, telling my cousin was her mother was gone was different.

  4. What a heart breaking moment. It was very mature of you to handle it though.

My daughter's room always had ladybugs wandering around, all year. I hope they are good luck for her sake! My parent's house has stinkbugs. Not as cute by far.

I've never kept track of the books I've read in a year, but that might be a fun exercise. I've always wondered how much I'm really reading.

    1. I hope the ladybugs bring good luck as well! I keep track of the books I read through Goodreads and by taking part in the reading challenge. Happy New Year, Tamara!

  6. Oh Bish, that was so wrenching for you and your cousin, and at such a young age. Death of a parent is tragic enough, but a suicide leaves a different kind of pain for those left behind. This made my heart heart ache.

Thank you for the beautiful pictures of the moon, the ladybugs and the lovely robins.

  7. I love those rules. That's a great way to embrace life.

Having been the wife of a man who committed suicide and having to try to help my young children eventually understand, my heart goes out to you and your cousin. I call suicide the gift that just keeps on giving. I grieve for the place the person who commits suicide is in for that to seem the only option to them, but to the remaining loved ones it's the ultimate abandonment. That's hard to explain to a child

    1. Oh my, Donna. I can't even begin to imagine what that must have been like for you and your children. At least my cousin and I were *older*. But with young children, it must have been hard.

  8. I'm not one to make resolutions, figuring that if there's something I want to change badly enough, it shouldn't wait until a new year. :)

  9. What a growing up moment. I have a feeling there are some adults out there who might consider something like that a growing up moment at any age. Thank you for sharing it. As far as resolutions go, I don't bother. I'm constantly trying to be a better me, failing in some areas and exceeding in others. I had an awkward Christmas and will likely blog about it soon.

    1. Yes, it's a growing up moment at any age. I don't usually bother with resolutions either, but these *spoke* to me. Thanks for stopping by Toinette!

  10. That super moon picture is amazing!
My growing up moment happened when my dad suffered a stroke. He was such a proud man so to see him render almost helpless was a terrific shock. He recovered very well but went on to have a series of strokes over the following years and never fully recovered from the last one.
I’m thankful my dad was my dad.
I had a great Christmas, thank you, but I’ve not made any New Year resolutions. Perhaps I should think of some now.
    Happy New Year, Barbara.

    1. That must have been difficult for you and your family, Barbara. But I can tell, despite it all, he was loved, as were you.

  11. Hi Bish - the Super Moon I agree is amazing ... I had a glimpse (literally) before the clouds swept over once again ... I love the Zen rules - need to remember them ... and then your adult moment - that was just the right thing to do ... certainly not at all easy.

I do hope one and all have a very peaceful and happy New Year and 2017 ahead ... cheers to you and yours - Hilary
