Origins, A Celebration, Being Thankful

Origins is a recurring post in which I delve into the history of a word or phrase.

Today's word for no particular reason is:

Twilight

Twilight is that time after the sun goes down or just before it rises. It is that time when the sky is lit by the sun's refraction of the atmosphere. Thus, twilight actually happens twice a day.

Even so, the "twi" in twilight seem to be more closely related to "half." Therefore twilight really means half-light.

Dusk comes after twilight, though it can also mean that time of twilight before sunrise. But if we used dusk for that pre-twilight time of morning we might confuse ourselves, so it's probably better to use dawn instead.

Today is Winnie-the-Pooh Day!
It is celebrated today because it's A. A. Milne's birthday, born in 1882.
The original Winnie the Pooh toys
Christopher Robin's original stuffed animals which inspired the much loved stories.
Winnie-the-Pooh got his name from a real live Canadian black bear named Winnie that Christopher Robin often visited in the London Zoo. Pooh was the name of a swan he met while on holiday. Eeyore get his name because it kind of sounds like a donkey braying. Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Piglet, and Owl... it's easy to guess how their names were derived.

Celebrate today by reading your favorite 100 Acre Woods adventure. I'm partial to the story of the harrible horralump myself. I'm also partial Eeyore, as I can sometimes get misanthropic. What I love about the stories is that no one tries to change Eeyore, or put him on anti-depressants. They love and accept him just as he is.

Today is also Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

San Antonio, Texas is host to one of the largest marches in the United States. This year they are expecting some 200,000 men, women, and children to walk the nearly 3 mile route. You can find out more HERE.

Being Thankful
Today I'm thankful for:
JOY
Colours of Happiness 3
It's easy these days to forget to be joyful.
It's easy to forget to have the wonder
and playfulness of a child.
Go out, therefore, and be JOYFUL!

What are you thankful for today? I rather like the word twilight, what about you? Got a favorite Pooh story or character? Are you doing anything special for MLK Day? Got a reason to be joyful?

  1. So true that it's easy to forget to be joyful. And I didn't know how Winnie the Pooh got his name.

    1. Until I didn't a little research, I didn't know how Winnie got his name either.

  2. I've always thought of dusk in the evening not morning.
Those are some really old stuffed toys.
Joy is a great word for today!

    1. Dusk has always meant evening for me as well. I think it has to do more with the darkness, the duskiness of the light rather than the time of day.

  3. There's a lot going on today. Twilight is one of my favorite words. I've always called it the
"time of long shadows." I never thought of it also meaning a morning twilight, too. I've often felt an unexplainable sadness in my gut at twilight, expecially when the sun made the long shadows. My psychic empowered friend, told me it was karma from another life when I had 3
strong sons who were executed at twilight. Not exactly the most joyful story but .....who knows?

    1. Whatever the reason, the emotion is real. Twilight can certainly have the effect of producing melancholia.

  4. There's an ELO song called Twilight that I've always liked. Of course, the book and movie series has ruined that word for me now.

I always loved Tigger. So much energy.

    1. You know, I wanted to find a song on Youtube and no matter how I tried the only thing that came up was on the Twilight series. Boo.

    1. In the Caribbean and places near the equator, there isn't much in the way of twilight at all.

  6. I've always loved Winnie the Pooh but didn't know about today! Love seeing those old stuffed animals.

  7. I didn't know that twilight could apply to the light before dawn as well as after sunset. I did know that dusk applied to both. Dusk comes before the dawn, etc. But if both words apply to both occasions, they're synonyms! :)

    1. I didn't know dusk applied to both! And yes, I guess they are synonyms.

  8. I'm thankful that we only got four inches of snow, and that my daughter is home and we got to go out to breakfast. I am also thankful that you reminded me of reading this as a little girl: "They're changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
Alice is marrying one of the guards.
"A soldier's life is terrible hard,"
    Says Alice."

  9. The sound of twilight is lovely, so I do enjoy it. I like the sound of twixt, too. Maybe it's the tw sound that's good to the ear. I'd love to see that parade in Texas.

  10. I have a friend with the middle name of Twilight, which I always thought was quite neat. Granted, it's association with a certain franchise lately has been a bit unfortunate. But otherwise it's a joyful word :)

  14. Twilight suits me just fine. My favorite character is Rabbit. He is always so frustrated with the other characters. I understand this.

  15. I like the twilight too, especially for taking a walk. The boys loved Winnie the Pooh stories. I'm joyful today because I posted a blog, things might be getting back to normal and that's just fine!

  16. I'm glad I came by today. I love that your posts are always upbeat - no complaining. You manage to put a positive spin on just about anything. I finished reading and started to think that I actually have a lot to be joyful for and I'm going to concentrate on that instead of worrying about all those silly things I have no control over.

I really also liked your take on Eeyore. In today's world he would be sent to join a support group, placed on antidepressants, and possibly even be shunned. I like that his buddies did, in fact, just accept him as he was. That was really a positive attitude to take with someone of his disposition. I need to remember that.

Twilight - what can I say? The most beautiful time of day, and we get the potential to enjoy it twice each and every day.
