A to Z of Anansi the spider.
N is for Names
Like the story Rumpelstiltskin, there are name guessing stories in the Caribbean. I included one in my book, Anansi and Company. It's called, "Miss Ophelia's Daughter," and happens to be my personal favorite.
Here's a list of some characters who appear both in my book and in the collection of Jamaican Anansi stories.

With some names, it's obvious who the characters are. Others, not so much.
Anansi
Ant
Beetle
But-But - butterfly
Crow
Dog
Duppy - a ghost or spirit
Guinea-hen
Monkey
Mosquito
Mrs. Anansi

Quit-Quit - possibly a bird, either a bananaquit (pictured below) or grassquit

Ram-Goat
Rat
Sheep
Tacoomah, pronounced TUCK-a-man, is probably a spider but in different stories the name has been given to a dog, Anansi's son, and even to his wife.
Tiger
I love seeing name guessing games. I think in real life I would lose at them.
ReplyDeleteTacoomah was a variety of critters.
ReplyDeleteLove Blinky the lightening bug.
ReplyDeleteA good thing you gave the pronunciation for Tucooman. Of course I said it wrong in my mind.
ReplyDeleteI like the name Blinkie for a lightning bug! It's so cute.
ReplyDeleteYou're doing really well in my A-Z theme. You're tied for first so keep it up!! :)
Happy A to Z-ing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines
At first I was a bit confused by Blinkie, then it hit and I have to say that's perfect! (Clearly a little early for me still!)
ReplyDeleteName guessing games are so fun to read, but I'm with Medeia- I think I'd lose in real life!
ReplyDeleteSometimes name guessing games really frustrate me, others not so much. I guess I really have to be in the mood. A lot of the time I would rather laze around in the sun at the beach than think.
ReplyDeleteQuit-Quit is exactly the sound a bird makes every morning outside my bedroom window. It come each year, builds a next behind an eave and Quit-Quits, starting at dawn.
ReplyDeleteLove these names. I remember when I read your book, I loved to say Tacoomah, but I had the accent on the second syllable. I Iike it this way better.
Ram-Goat was cute.
ReplyDeleteHow awesome! I think that must be a cross cultural thing, the name guessing story. You'll probably find something similar in any culture.
ReplyDeleteTrue Heroes from A to Z
I love the name Duppy - or is that a creature? Loving it.
ReplyDeleteRumplestilskin was one of my favorites growing up.
ReplyDeleteit was very nice to meet all of you (waves hello)
ReplyDeleteI sure like the names But-but and Duppy. So cute! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Bish,
ReplyDeleteSuch interesting names. For a moment there, I thought I read Tacoma, as in the town right beside Seattle.
Penny's fictional human,
Gary :)
I want to Tuck-a-man in my pocket! Adorable, thanks for sharing these.
ReplyDeleteSome of these remind me of the names I wind up calling my felines, including the fosters. Smog became Smoggy Bum and then I just called him Bummo. ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Bish .. names evolve sometimes - but these are fun to see and read .. BananaQuit or GrassQuit are fun!
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary
