For this, my fourth year doing the challenge, I've decided to share place names from the Virgin Islands. For such a small spot in the ocean, it seems like every rock, cove, hill and house has been christened. The names are a unique mix of Spanish, Danish, French, Dutch, English, and African to name a few.
99 Steps, St. Thomas.
Other N Names:
Newfound Bay, St. John At one time a beautiful place to snorkle and find lobsters.
Nazareth, St. Thomas
Neltjeberg Estate, St. Thomas
Nisky Estate, St. Thomas
Nanny Point, St. John: This is a nice little video which highlights the views and cacti on the south side of St. John.
99 Steps, St. Thomas.
There are actually more than 99 steps, but they are among the most picturesque of the the many stairs on St. Thomas. 99 Steps goes up from Government Hill to Blue Beards Castle. The stairways were used to connect different levels on a hill where roads weren't or couldn't be built.

Those steps look pretty magical, like they lead to a lost kingdom. Mind you, Bluebeard's Castle does sound pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was at St Thomas, I took more pictures of steps and bricks than beaches.
ReplyDeleteI'm out of breath just looking at that picture. on STX it seems as if everything is built on a hill. BUT, I agree with Nick, there is something magical about them.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to climb to the top! Beautiful and very enticing steps.
ReplyDeleteA lot of steps, but not too steep. And very inviting. I loved the video :)
ReplyDeleteRunning up and down that a few times would be great exercise!
ReplyDeleteDid you count all the steps? holy cow.
ReplyDeleteThese steps looks really great! I enjoyed the video very much.

The steps would overwhelm me at this point, but in years past, I would have...
ReplyDeleteSeeing the desert side of St. Thomas was such a contrast.
I suppose you have climbed these steps many time. I'd be kinda dizzy at the top. Perhaps I'd have to sing 99 bottles of beer on the wall on the way down.
