Random Thought Thursday

Today's quote is from Rachel Carson, writer, scientist and ecologist.

Those who dwell among the mysteries of the Earth are never alone or weary of life.

I seem to be most content when I am walking through woods or along a beach or by a river.

I am stilled by the stillness of trees. Though the wind sings songs through their leaves and branches they are rooted to one place.

I am awed by the ever changing ocean. When I rest my body upon her bosom I know that every molecule is miraculously displaced to give me space.

I am moved by the flow of rivers. They are the veins and arteries of earth, always and forever, seeking their way home to the heart of planet earth, the oceans.

Where are you most content?

  1. Nature does it, or one of *those* moments with my kids when I get an unexpected kiss or cuddle from them.

  3. Lovely post, Bish. My answer? When I'm with my Christopher. :)

Second place is when I'm on one of my horses, looking at the wilderness.

I grew up in South Florida. The Keys, so I'm also content at the ocean, especially when there is no one else there. These (people) AND things calm me and makes me feel so happy.

  4. I do agree that being with nature does make one content. I know I do feel very content when I'm at my dad's northwoods cabin relaxing and just looking at the beauty of the lake.

  6. I love Rachel Carson's prose. One year, I read her book, Under the Sea Wind, when I found myself with nothing else to read. To be honest, if I hadn't been desperate, I wouldn't have read it, but I was stunned by her writing. I got through it in no time, then read it all over again. I really can't believe Under the Sea Wind isn't better known.

I'm happy in so many places -- in the forest, climbing in the the hills behind our house, swimming in the sea. But I'm probably happiest outside, gardening.

  7. I'm most content out in nature too.

    Great post!
