Songs for the Times - Part One

I’m not one to get into politics. It’s really nobody’s business what I think (not that anyone would care anyway) or how I might vote.

Last night I listened for about 35-40 minutes to "the debate." I'm convinced. I’ve had it.

So…for the next few posts, until we finally get past November 4th, by which time it will be too late to say “Ooops, I made a mistake,” I am going to share a few songs that seem to be “speaking” to me.

You may interpret them as you wish.

Don’t Make Promises (you can’t keep) – by Tim Hardin on his first album from 1966, recorded at different times by Three Dog Night and Scott McKenzie

Seems the songs we're singing
All about tomorrow,
Tunes of promises that you can't keep.
Every moment bringing
Love I can only borrow,
Telling me lies in your sleep.

Do you think I'm not aware
Of what you're saying
Or why you're saying it?
Is it hard to keep me where
You want me staying? No.
Don't go on betraying.

We had a chance to find it,
The time was now or never,
Promise the things that I need.
Left the things behind it,
Threw our chance away forever
Telling your lies in your sleep
Do you think I'm not aware
Of what you're saying
Or why you're saying it?
Is it hard to keep me where
You want me staying? No, no.
Don't go on betraying.

Don't make promises you can't keep.
Don't make promises you can't keep.
Don't make promises you can't keep.
Tired of hearing 'em.
Tired of hearing 'em.

Feel free to share a song that speaks to you.

  1. ROFL!! This is great. I couldn't bring myself to actually pay attention to the debates. Neither candidate makes me truly happy. ANd last night's debate was proof of that fact.

I love your decision to list songs. I'll have to find some of my own and post 'em!

  2. LOL -- I'm looking forward to this being over too. An interesting comment was made last year about both candidates. Regardless of what their dreams and ambitions are, regardless of what they're promising they will do -- the statistics are showing that it probably won't be possible or feasible. So even if their hearts are in the right place, it's a sad, sad time we're in.

  3. Last "night" I mean -- not last year like I so stupidly typed. Sorry.

  4. Debate? Isn't that one of those game shows where the participants win by failing to answer the questions and/or by doing the most elaborate dance around the issues?
