Hurricane Omar

Please keep the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in your thoughts and prayers. Even though he is "only" a category one hurricane it looks like he's going to pass right over the islands. And there is always the chance he could gain strength.

My mom and sister, my cousins and friends will probably be fine. Their homes are strong and have survived far worse than 75 MPH winds. It's the rain at this point that they don't need any more of. They've already had quite a bit from this system, before it turned into a hurricane, and have experienced some flooding. Still it's always a bit nerve racking for me as I wait out the storm from a safe distance.

Unlike people along the coastlines of the U. S. people in the islands cannot be evacuated, they have no place to go. They have learned over the centuries to hunker down and wait it out.

You can take a look at Omar at the National Hurricane Center.

  1. Oh boy--my thoughts go out to them. It's hard to sit on the sidelines ad know trouble's brewing. Take care of yourself.

  3. It's about 3:30 AM in St. Thomas. Thanks so much for your good thoughts. Omar has turned into a small Cat. 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph which radiate out only 35 miles from its center.

Thanks to it's Northeasterly turn, the center passed Point Udall (easternmost tip of St. Croix) about three hours ago and it continues to move northeasterly. Will will get more rain, and perhaps some tropical storm strength winds (under 75 mph) later today. These, to us, are almost nothing, but feel so lucky to have been sparcd the actual brunt of this storm.

Will report rainfall totals to Bish in another day or so when it has completed this "rite of passage."
