Substitute "play" with "write" and what do you have have? You have permission to write what you want, how you want.

Who's your idol? Who's writing has influenced you the most? (Jack London and John Steinbeck are two writers I always wanted to write like.)
That's a great quote. My idols tend to be people who have done amazing things in the world, like Mother Theresa, Ghandi, and Martin Luther King. Wish I could be more like them.

I totally used to idolize Dean Koontz. I mean, read Odd Thomas and tell me you don't wish you were Dean... But, I realized that he has a style of his own, and it may not mesh with other genres. It's great to have people who inspire us, but we definitely have to be true to our own vision first.
ReplyDeleteCharles Dickens is my idol. I have a secret project going that involves him ;) I definitely don't write like him, though. Some of his sentences were a paragraph long, LOL. But he was a master at using his words to tell a story. Thanks for the inspirational quote!

My idol is Anne McCaffrey for fiction and Gary Chapman for non-fiction.
ReplyDeleteI've never really felt like I've had an idol, strangely. I do admire authors who are able to write several books (you know, besides the ones who clearly use ghost writers). I've always wanted to be able to write book after book after book and still get people's attention.

Yes, I love that quote. It really captures what it is to write. I think it's well timed, too. I know I could stand to be reminded to be myself and not try so hard to fit in with the writers I love.
