Genre Favorites Blogfest

Today me, and a gazillion others, are participating in Alex Cavanaugh's blogfest! What fun!

Our goal is to:
List your favorite genre of:
Movie
Music
Books
And a guilty pleasure genre from any of the three categories!

Not like this is easy or anything... Geesh, Alex, what were you thinking?

Favorite movie genre: I guess I'm going to have to go with historical. You know period pieces, anything Roman, Elizabethan, Victorian, the list is looooooong. I simply LOVE the costuming.

Favorite music genre: OMG, way hard to choose. But after much thought and head-banging,  I decided to go with what I heard growing up, which shaped my love and appreciation for other genres. That would be jazz. Big Band Jazz, King Oliver Jazz, Charlie Byrd BeBop Jazz, most any kind of jazz.

Here's The Glenn Miller Band with In The Mood. I can remember my dad playing his trombone along with the music and blowing those low notes. And can you hear it? It's there, in those opening repetitive notes, the seeds of Rock and Roll.

Favorite book genre: This is the hardest of all because I'm SUCH an eclectic reader. I like everything from historical fiction to science fiction, historical non-fiction to true crime, Jack London to John Steinbeck, Dr. Seuss to L. Frank Baum and anything in between.

It is impossible to choose. It would be like choosing one child over another, I couldn't do it.  So I'm going to cheat and tell you my least favorite genre and that would be horror. I see things in my head too vividly, carry those images around which seem to have negative effects on my tender subconscious and psyche. Gives me nightmares! So... I don't do horror movies and I don't read horror stories.

And guilty pleasure? I don't much feel guilty about something I enjoy, but I'll go with a well written historical romance and my favorite chocolate.

Thanks, Alex, for such a fun blogfest!

  4. You are eclectic. But I'm so glad you like to read historical romance as a guilty pleasure. What would I do without you?

  5. I went with period films too. The costuming is amazing.

And I too love big band jazz.

  6. I loved how you decided the one thing you don't like in books. We share a similar heart except for music -- mine's all classical/baroque stuff, with a bit of good rock-n-roll.

  7. mmm... chocolate! Ahh, that Elizabeth film launched my love of Cate Blanchette. She is so so awesome. And yay for Jazz!

I'm kind of like you w/books. But for me romance-slash any subgenre will do! :o) <3

  8. Bish,
I do enjoy big band sound too, but don't hear much of that unless it's special programming on the radio.

Like you, if I watch or read anything scary, I carry it around with me for ages. So, I never watch horror movies or read books in that genre.

  9. Nice to meet you! I missed out on the blogfest but I'm with you on not liking the horror genre, for basically the same reasons. By the way, your name is awesome :)

  10. Hi Bish
Oh I love the Big Band music too. My mother used to tell us stories of listening to the radio when the bands played live from Elitch Gardens in Denver Colorado. When we first moved here, we had to go to Elitches which is also an amusement park. They had wonderful gardens. Sadly, they moved the park and lost the gardens.

  11. I can handle some horror, but I want most of it left to my imagination.

  12. I love historical dramas, as well, especially the costumes. And what's not to love about swing and big band? It'll always be fun!

  17. LOVE Elizabeth! And that's a great version in recent times too. Thought all the actors were fab but particularly loved the bad guy, Christopher Eccleston and of course Geoffrey Rush! Oh and Cate... ;-)

  19. My parents were huge Glenn Miller fans so I grew up listening to him. My dad danced to Glen (live) at a dance hall back in the forties. I think it would've been amazing to live back then!

  22. I've watched Elizabeth countless times and never gets old for me. Every time I've gone to a jazz club I've always had a great time and enjoyed fantastic music.

  23. I had to stop watching horror movies because I found that for days afterward, I couldn't get the images out of my head. It's just too much.

Love some good jazz though (despite my rock tendencies).

  26. This is a fun blogfest! I don't read much horror, but it is probably my favorite movie genre. My sixteen-year-old daughter and I are the only ones in the house who will watch horror movies, so I always make her watch them with me. :)

  27. Great choices, Bish! I'm a huge fan of jazz, too.

  28. Those are some great choices. Love costume dramas. The last one I remember watching, though, would be The Dutchess starring Kiera Knightley. :-D

  29. Hi, Bish. It's very nice to meet you. I do read and write horror fiction, but I can totally understand your reasons for avoiding the subject. In fact, I'm only good with those subjects when they are between paper pages. In reality, I'm terribly poor with it. You should see me when there's a dead frog in the yard or something! If I could pay someone else to get rid of it, I would! Lol!
Thanks for sharing your list. Many I have seen so far tend to be the same. Yours was a breath of fresh air. Take care.

  32. I love that Elizabeth trailer. Great movie and costumes. We used to go to a great jazz club in Seoul but there really isn't anything good out in the country where I'm at now. And chocolate- yay!

  33. I love me some jazz, too. I looove sci fi and fantasy both in books and movies, though I do enjoy a little mystery every now and then.
