Abrstactions

Abstractions, a recurring post, is one of my all time favorite ways to play with words. An abstraction is a concept that acts as a super-categorical noun for all subordinate concepts, and connects any related concepts as a group, field, or category. (Clear?) They are words like love, hate, joy, beauty, cunning, disgust. Abstractions make fine writing prompts as well as being a kind of poetry or a piece of flash fiction.

Write two or three sentences using the following simple rules. You can change them around.
1: Abstraction plus verb plus place
2: Describe what the abstraction is wearing
 3: Summarize the action

Today's ABSTRACTION is: HOPE

Assistants and George Frederic Watts - Hope - Google Art Project
Hope, by George Frederic Watts (1817-1904)

Wearing a sheer silken shift, Hope seeps into the tiniest cracks. She permeates even the most misanthropic mind and will not be denied.

Hope hides behind the curtain.
Dressed in light
She sings us out of darkness.

Now it's your turn. I "hope" you'll share your abstraction in the comments.

  1. This early in the morning, if I wrote something it would be beyond abstract!
    Yours is very well done.

  2. Love this exercise!

Anger stomps down the steps wearing rags of smoke and wool. Gnashing his teeth, he yanks the furnace door open, grabs the bellows and pumps oxygen onto the flame.

  5. Hehehe since it's lunch time.

Hunger with skin drawn against bones,
gnaws away at anything it can get,
    and is never completely stilled.

    :-)

  7. Hope often gets overlooked. She doesn't mind though. When he is ready, she'll be there, dressed in her cloak of encouragement, and above the screams of despair he will hear her.

    "You can do it."

  8. Hope rose up within her.
    Draped in false promises
Crushed and broken with a fist.

  9. Hope is the things I cannot see.
But the things I wish for.
    It is my deepest desires.

ACK! I know what I want to do with this exercise, but my mind will not cooperate. Yours is wonderful.

I have not been sleeping. My mind is a fuzz ball. Just wanted to check in with you. I love the Watts, Hope. Lovely. (((hugs)))

  10. Sorry -- I was momentarily dazzled by that great photo, which is so marvelously eclectic it makes me want to put on a kimono with hiking boots and grab a banjo.

Hope creeps in, her clothes torn, her face bruised -- but fierce and determined. Will be she be welcome or appreciated? She doesn't even care. There is a place for her here, she just knows it. No matter what, there always will be.
