Today's word is:
Actually, I don't think its possible to eliminate all "ly" adverbs from our writing.
However, we can use ones that are not so common. Some of these come in through the back door, so to speak. Which word you choose all depends on the context in which you use it.
Personally, (ah hem) I've long been rather fond of indubitably. I like how it sort of skips over my teeth and tongue and tumbles out my lips as if it's about to fall flat on it's face.
Here are your alternatives.
absolutely, accurately, admittedly, almost, as a matter of fact
certainly, considerably
de facto
essentially, exactly, existing
forsooth, frankly
genuinely
honestly
immanently, importantly, in (all) actuality, in effect, in fact, in point of fact, in reality, in truth, indeed, indisputably, indubitably
just
literally
materially, meaningfully
nearly
physically, positively, practically, precisely
real, realistically, really, right
sharp, significantly, simply, smack-dab, squarely, substantially
tangibly, to be sure, truly
undoubtedly, unquestionably
verily, veritable, virtually
"Actually, my dear, I don't give a damn."
"Verily, my dear, I don't give a damn."
"Realistically, my dear, I don't give a damn."
"Admittedly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
None of these work. But this one does.
Got an over used word? Let me know. If it's not already on my list, I'll add it and will *eventually* get around to finding the alternatives.
My two words that I picked up on recently: even and just. :-D
ReplyDeleteI tend to overuse: just, so, and absolutely. Hee hee ... I need to see this movie HERE!
ReplyDeleteHa! I use "actually" a lot when speaking, and when writing blog comments, but I rarely use it in my writing (I hope).
ReplyDeleteForsooth! I like that one.
ReplyDeleteMy bugaboo word is "just."
ReplyDeleteWas, that , only, just... Gah!
ReplyDeleteLove that quick clip... Makes me want to watch the whole movie again.
Xx
My Terrible Triad is this, really, and -- yes -- actually.
ReplyDeleteThis was such a fun post. I love thinking about these kinds of words! Very creative actually.
ReplyDeleteI love the word tangibly. It's all sharp and spiky :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree - it's not possible to eliminate ALL -ly words, and I'm not sure we SHOULD. What we must do is eliminate all of the unnecessary -ly words. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
I tend to lean on the word "so" a lot. I like the word actually, which probably means I overuse it too! I should bookmark this page.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I am smitten with quite a few "ly" words. Like actually. I know they don't always need to be in the text, but often there is a cadence of beat that appeals to me. Thank goodness for revisions and red pens. : )
ReplyDeleteThanks for the blog loaded with so many information. Stopping by your blog helped me to get what I was looking for. ahrefs vs semrush vs moz
