Random Thought Thursday

Today's quote comes from David L. George, someone I have never heard of. When I Googled his name there several different David L. Georges, therefore I am unable to provide a picture or any kind of biography. Whoever he is/was, this quote attributed to him has found it's way into my collection.

Don't be afraid to take a big step if one is indicated. You can't cross a chasm in two small jumps.

Sometimes I can be timid. And yet, most of the major decisions I've made in my life have been spontaneous leaps off cliffs or across gulfs, without a parachute or springs on my feet. And always, always, I have landed safely at the bottom or on the other side.

That's not to say that once I landed there weren't adventures, both good and bad. What I am saying is, the leap into the unknown isn't really the hard part. The hard part is what to do once you get to there. That's when the real work/fun begins.

But then, isn't every day, every minute even, a leap into the unknown, a jump across a chasm of time, for which there is no certainty and no sure landing?

So...are you a cliff hanger-oner or an Evel Knieveler?

  1. Well, I'll tell you one thing--I'm not jumping the chasm in that photo! However, anything more reasonable and I'll take the leap. :)

  2. I'm such a cautious person; I may be a hanger on-er. But I guess you gotta take that leap sometimes or your life would be stagnant. I think I take more leaps than I realize.

  3. It's so true. I think back on my life, and all the best stuff was the result of a crazy leap.

  4. I love the picture on your blog. It's awesome. I'm a bit timid, though. Jumping from cliffs doesn't appeal to me.

  5. I'm a leaper, definitely. I should probably think a lot more before I do it, but then I'd talk myself out of it.

  6. Sometimes you do have to have faith to leap. I'm usually pretty good at it ... usually.

  7. So true, Bish. I guess I'm a leaper too. That's probably because I don't think too much. If I did, I'd talk myself out of things ... I leap, then panic, and then think about what I've done. Usually it's good. Faith and hope carry me through these wild leaps.

  8. You know, I think I'm pretty balanced. My mother never had to ask me if I'd jump off the bridge just because my BFF did, but yeah, I'm not averse to a good leap.

  9. Life is a leap...of faith. We can curl up and give up or we can stand up and live.

  10. I leap too -- after I've thought long and hard and figured out that what was on the other side was worth leaping for.

It always amazes me that my husband and I have made all our big decisions fairly quickly -- getting married, having children, buying a house -- but we sweat blood over the little ones like what to have for dinner.

  11. I think everything we do where the outcome is outside our control takes courage and faith. I'm probably more tentative in the sense that I like to know what I'm getting into before comitting, but once I do, I work towards the goal for as long as the end justifies the means.

  12. Great quote! I guess I lean toward being hesitant at first, but once I make a decision I go for it full throttle.

  13. I'm afraid I take leaps, then look back and faint!

  14. I'm a cliff hanger-oner I think, though deciding to get serious about this writing thing was a kind of Evel Knievel-ish move. :)
