Random Thought Thursday on Tuesday?

I'm still unplugged and obviously confused about days and dates....

Today's quote comes from Jack Kerouac.

Talk about your strange and complicated character....He lived hard and lived short, died at the age of 47. I'm not a big Kerouac fan, but I recognize his place in American Literature. I like this picture of him which shows him reading from his book On the Road that he wrote on one long continuous roll of paper. Imagine any of us trying a stunt like that!?

And I particularly like this quote from him, in light of today's seeming trendy approach to YA writing. (But then, I've always been a bit of a rebel, a non-conformist, so of course it would apeal to me.)

Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion.

So the questions are: Do you write for you? Or do you follow the crowd? Do you dare to be different? Or do you write for the trend, the fad, and what's popular?

Here are a few authors who, in my humble opinion, dared to be different.
Dr. Seuss, L. Frank Baum, H. G. Wells, Eva Ibbotson, Roald Dahl, Madeleine L'Engle. What authors do you feel should be added to list?

Here's a little eyecandy. Colors of fall.

  1. Great list ... Love Roald Dahl esp. I write for me but also for an audience of children. I have things to share with them. Oooh, great pictures.

  2. I'm surprised you don't like Kerouac. Then again I've only read On the Road, so I'm not sure how I feel about him. I did like that novel. He also has some pretty cool poetry. There is one called "On Western Haiku" or something like that which I love.
