Random Thought Thursday

Today's quote is from Glenda Jackson, actress.

I can't actually see myself putting makeup on my face at the age of sixty. But I can see myself going on a camel train to Samarkand.

Of course I have no idea when she said this, and whether or not she wears makeup, but I think it's a hoot because it sounds just like me. (Good grief, could there be two of us in the world? Lord help you all!) I don't wear makeup. I gave up trying to cover my acne scars long ago. I figured if a person didn't like me because of the way I looked well then, that person wasn't/isn't worth my time. And I'd definitely go on a camel trip.

Throughout my life I have been pleasantly and wonderfully surprised by the people (not including family who have no choice but to take me as I am) like my handsome husband, who do and have genuinely cared for me. Me, with the big nose, scarred skin, and wearing glasses. Me, who has never been interested in fashion or shoes or hair and makeup.

What about you? Would you go for an Oprah make-over and put a mask on? Or are you comfortable in your own skin, just the way you are, warts and all?

  1. All I know is that when I saw your name in jen's comments my first thought was 'it's BISH!' I haven't seen bish in ages! lol. So you're definitely likeable and a memorable person in my book! Missed you!

  2. When I quit the corporate world about 10 years ago I stopped wearing make-up. It didn't bother me. I also stopped wearing the nice clothes and fancy shoes, preferring sweats, sneakers and t's.

People, unfortunately mistake me for my daughter's grandmother now instead of being her mother.

So I still do dye my hair but it really doesn't help. I still look the age I'm supposed to. And I'd rather ride a camel too.

  3. I've never worn make-up. In junior high, when the other girls all glommed onto it, I noticed that most girls didn't break out in pimples until they started using the stuff. By the time I was past the pimple stage, I knew I was as pretty as I needed to be without it.

Most women are. We're trained to think that we're not, but we are. It's one thing to decorate your face a bit for a special occasion. It's another to feel naked without a layer of dirt (that's what it's made of) on your face.

  4. Same here ... but I didn't grow up seeing people being made up or anything. That was for movie stars. Oh, but I love lipstick and even as a little girl, I'd smear beetroot over my lips :)

  5. I do wear it, and I know I'll wear it long past 60. But I think there are different ways of wearing it. When I find myself wondering what a woman REALLY looks like under all that, then I don't like it. To me, it's enhancement, not cover-up. For example, my eyebrows have practically disappeared, and I feather them in. My cheeks used to be rosy and now they're paler, so I add subtle blush. And yeah, I dye my hair and as of now have no idea when I might stop. Because I know that how we present ourselves affects both the opportunities and respect women get. (Men too, but women much more so.) It's just a fact. Still, I think it's a personal choice for everyone, and basing your caring for another person on whether they wear makeup or dress up is sad. As for clothes, pretty thing are lovely for special occasions, but for LIFE, bring on the jeans!

  6. I'm with you. I do wear makeup now, but I didn't for years. And I recently started wearing earrings because my hair was so hideous, I thought they'd make me look more feminine. But for the most part, I'm comfortable in my own skin.

  7. I'm somewhere in the middle. At the moment I have NO makeup on and I'm just happy as can be. However, if Oprah were to offer me a makeover, you better bet your booty I'd jump at the chance...out of curiosity if nothing else.

I mean, you've seen pics of the stars without their makeup on and wow, you hardly recognize them. So I'm curious to see who they would make me look like. I'd never keep it up though. No way I'm going to spend more than 5 mins on hair and makeup when I'm rushing around in the morning.

  8. It depends on the day and how much sleep I got last night! I have horrible, dark under-eye circles. Most days they don't bother me, but there are times Oprah would be tempting! :-)

  9. I never wore a ton of makeup and I still don't. If I do, I go for the natural look. I only wear it when hubby and I go out but with two little ones, that's not happening much. I am comfortable in my own skin.

  10. Forgot to say that I did go on a camel ride about 15 years ago ... FUN!

  11. I do wear makeup, but because I like to and want to and enjoy it! I love putting on lotions and a little something in the way of makeup. It feels like pampering and dress up and indulgence. But would I go for an Oprah makeover? Nah. Sure, I'm a girlie girl, and I'm comfortable that, but on my terms. ; )

  12. I'm like you. No makeup. If I'm going to a wedding or some other fancy event, I'll get crazy and put on mascara. But that's it. I like myself the way I am. :)
