Writing Prompts - Proverbs and Adages

Collect common proverbs, adages, favorite quotes, or one-liners. Change them in some small way and write about it for 5 or 10 minutes.

A penny saved is a penny earned.

A penny saved is a penny spent, unless you leave it with the cashier, in which case you haven't spent it, you've given it away. But if you didn't leave it with the cashier, if you put it in your pocket what then? What can a penny buy? Nothing that I know of, not these days. So why bother saving them? You'd have to save at least a hundred to be able to buy much of anything. And by the time you've saved up a hundred pennies, well then...you have a dollar. And a dollar can sometimes sound a lot, so you may as well save it. So then we go back to old Ben Frank's original adage. Yes...a penny save can indeed be a penny earned. But is it worth it? That's up to you.

  1. That's a good one. I once heard of a man who saved pennies until he had enough to buy a brand new truck. When he got to the dealership the manager wouldn't take the pennies even though they were all rolled. The man went to another dealership, then another, then another. He had 25 thousand dollars worth of pennies in the back of his truck and he couldn't buy what he wanted.

so is a penny saved really a penny earned?

  2. I used to save pennies in a milk jug. People would give me HANDFULS of pennies because they didn't want them. They were a nuisance.

A gallon-sized carton holds about $80 worth of pennies (and weighs about 8 tons). So a penny saved CAN be a penny earned!

  3. A bird in the hand is worth less than two in the air ... unless you are cleaning crude oil off of its poor little wings.

  4. Luv it! My cousin would put her change in a jar every night, so that she could save it up to use to pay for her wedding. She had a nice wedding. It wasn't Hollywood, or anything, but it was nice and didn't seem to lack anything. I guess the "penny-concept" worked for her. :0)
