Z is for Zest

Zest: Obsolete French (now zeste) for orange or lemon peel (used as flavoring.) A quality of enhancing enjoyment: piquancy. Keen enjoyment, relish.

I've enjoyed this A to Z Challenge. To my new followers and friends, thank you.

I hope I have both educated and entertained, added a little zest.

I've had quite a bit of lemon and orange peal in my life: been mountain climbing in the Rockies, mule packed into the Havasupai Indian Reservation and camped at Havasu Falls, helped build a log cabin, slept in the grass at Golden Gate Park, walked from Vermont Ave. in Hollywood down Santa Monica Blvd. all the way to Santa Monica Beach then, after spending time at the beach, walked all the way back.

Zest doesn't have to come from big things, it can come from small things too, like the smooch a loved one gives you, the giggle of child, the tail wag of a dog, a sunset, bird song. I am quite content now to find zest in walking the dog or going for a drive in the '57 Chevy.

It's all around us. All we have to do is get out our little graters and grate some off, it's free for the taking. And it goes well with everything: a cup of tea or coffee, the scent of rose, a juicy hamburger, a crunchy apple, a cool drink of water, breathing.

Zesting an orange
Go get your grater, go find your zest and daily grate a little bit into your life. It will make life taste better, I promise.
